Long Peace Street – A History of Chang An Avenue and Modern China
A talk by author Jonathan Chatwin

We can all pick out Chang’an Jie on a map ; occasionally we drive along it; sometimes we walk a small stretch. But rare is the person who knows the imposing street intimately or has walked it all.

One person who has is British sinophile Jonathan Chatwin, spending months exploring the twenty-mile show street and the alleys that flank it.

Chatwin will discuss the long and evolving history of Chang’an and show how its transformation fits into the wider story of China’s rise.

“Filled with insights, observations and anecdotes, Chatwin brings to life the past – and present – of one of the world’s great cities in an account that is as thoughtful as it is informative.” Peter Frankopan, Professor of Global History at Oxford University and author of The Silk Roads.

Dr Jonathan Chatwin is the author of Long Peace Street: A walk in modern China, and Anywhere Out of the World, a literary biography of the travel writer and novelist Bruce Chatwin. He holds a PhD in English Literature from the University of Exeter. His essays and articles have been published by the British Film Institute, the Los Angeles Review of Books, Caixin, Time Out and the Asian Review of Books amongst others, and he writes regularly on Chinese history and culture for a range of publications.
