FCCC Tibet Position Paper

Mar 29, 2019

Mar. 29, 2019 – The FCCC has published a Tibet Position Paper calling for unfettered access to the Tibet Autonomous Region and Tibetan-inhabited regions. Based on FCCC surveys, the paper shows how obstacles to reporting pose a serious impediment to obtaining accurate information about the lives of ethnic Tibetans. Permission for independent trips is rarely granted, leaving foreign journalists only able to visit on occasional highly-controlled media trips. Applications for these trips has declined in recent years. The Tibet situation, coinciding with tighter restrictions in Xinjiang, suggests that, overall, reporting access is worsening. As China seeks center stage as host of the 2022 Winter Olympics, the nation’s leadership should ensure greater transparency to the international community.
