Emboldened by economic strength and growing military power, China is emerging as a challenger
to US dominance in the Pacific. But its promised peaceful rise has done little to convince regional
powers that it will not use force to press longstanding territorial claims or attempt sea-denial
operations in Asia’s lucrative trade routes.

How is China’s military modernization undermining Beijing’s policy of Peaceful Development?
What is driving China to modernize its navy? Why is a military status-quo between the United
States and China in the Pacific unlikely? How do China’s neighbours respond to China’s military
transition?

Join Jonathan Holslag for a discussion of these questions and more based on his new book, “China
and India: Prospects for Peace.”
